Doesburg is located on the IJssel at the place where the Old IJssel flows into the IJssel. Doesburg originated on the site where a castle was located during the Roman times. According to some sources, the IJssel did not come naturally, but a waterway was dug about 12 years BC by order of the Roman emperor Nero Claudius Drusus. The beautiful town of Doesburg was then called Drusibergum.
